Vocabulary and Grammar: What I Got

(Please Note: The definitions below correspond to how the words are used in the text. Many words have multiple definitions.)


 

Dalmation: a type of dog, which is recognizable by its fur which is white with multiple black spots.

High: under the influence of drugs.

Example: The police suspected that he had drugs because he was acting as if he were high.

 

Play the guitar like a mother fuckin riot: He can play the guitar with a lot of energy and really well.

 

You got: you have / you’ve got  (In informal spoken English, the word got can sometimes replace have – when have mean to own).

 

Get runover: to be hit by a car and then the car drives over you.

 

Get can often be used to form the passive tense in informal spoken English.  Get shot = be shot, be hit = get hit, etc.

 

To start static means to start trouble, usually the type of trouble that would lead to a fight.

 

To get something off your chest means to talk about something that is bothering you.  In this case, the singer says that if he has a problem, he discusses it instead of starting a fight over it. 

 

Bullet proof vest: a type of vest that protects the person wearing it from gunshots.

 

Charity: an organization that gives material support (food, clothes, money, etc) to people in need.

Example: They are very generous to people who are less fortunate.  Every year they give hundreds of dollars to charity.

 

Long Beach: A city about 20 miles to the south of Los Angeles on the Pacific Ocean coast.

 

Get served: to act inappropriately and to get what you deserve.

Example: He was talking about how great a basketball player he was all day, but during the game, the other team didn’t let him score one basket.  I guess you could say he got served. 

 

Run away: to escape from your master.  Usually used to refer to young children leaving their home and parents or a pet leaving its master. 

Example: She ran away from home when she was 14 years old, but returned 2 days later.

 

Pot: a slang term for marijuana

 

Hits the bottle: to drink alcohol (usually describes an alcoholic drinking).

Example: We knew that he had an alcohol problem when we saw that he was already hitting the bottle before lunch.

 

Rock: a slang word for crack cocaine.   

 

Sane: to be mentally healthy.  In this case, the singer says living with his dog prevents him from going crazy.

Example: A sane person would not ride a motorcycle at high speeds without a helmet.
